History of the Battalion

Kerala Armed Police 5 Battalion was raised on 23/04/1983 as per the GO( MS ) 58/83 Home for providing guard to Hydro Electric Projects and to other Vital Installations. Later vide GO ( MS ) 34/84 Home dated 20/03/84 this Battalion was named Kerala Police 5 Battalion with its Headquarters at Ernakulam.KAP 5 Battalion was renamed as Armed Police Training centre in 1984-85. This was re-converted as Kerala Armed Police 5 Battalion on 3/12/1990 vide GO(MS ) 163/90 Home. At present the Battalion is meant to feed the needs of Kottayam and Idukki Districts.

In order to accommodate Kerala Police Academy at Thrissur in the campus of the KAP 5 Battalion the Headquarters of the Battalion was shifted on 2.09.2003 from Thrissur to Maniyar in Pathanamthitta District. The Battalion is ordered to be shifted to Kuttikkanam, Idukki District in 2003. Orders have been issued for the construction of new barracks and quarters over there.

Detachment Camp

Munnar Detachment Camp

Munnar Detachment Camp had been taken over from the Commandant KAP 1 Battalion as per Order No. J2-97823/90 dtd 01.12.90 of DGP, Kerala during 12/90.

At Munnar the Department possesses 4.87 Acres of land in Survey No. 63, 912, 914 in Kannan Devan Hills Village, Munnar, Iduukki District. The land contains 2 separate barrack buildings with a capacity to contain 200 Police men at a time with mess, Latrine and bathroom facilities. Apart from this on the other side of the tarred road One Office building, store room and Bell of arms etc also exist.

Maniyar

At the Headquarters in Maniyar the Department possess 09. 40.40 hectares of Govt. Land in resurveyNo.371/3 of Vadasserikkara village, Maniyar, Pathanamthitta District.

Kuttikkanam

Vide GO(MS) No. 9/2003/Home dated. 13. 01. 2003 the HQRs of KAP 5 Bn is decided to be shifted to Kuttikkanam in Idukki District and the Department possess 274 Acres 24 Cents of land under survey No. 1131 of Peerumadu Village. It has been directed to the Deputy director , Survey Department, Idukki to re-survey the land at Kuttikkanam as a preliminary stage to begin the construction works there.
