Forensic Science Laboratory

Forensic science Laboratary

Kerala Police has got a small but relatively well-equipped Forensic Science Laboratory since 1961 at Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). The Forensic Science Laboratory consists of eight Divisions, namely, Ballistics, Biology, Serology, Chemistry, Explosives, Documents, Documents (Civil), and Physics. A Director is the Head of the FSL and he is assisted by two Joint Directors. Each Division has one Assistant Director and a Scientific Assistant. There are mobile FSL units in every district. We also plan three regional laboratories in the state—one of them has become functional at Kannur.

The equipments available in the Ballistics Division include a Leica FSC Comparison Microscope. The Biology Division has a Leica DMLS2 Microscope with Image Workstation and a Fluorescent Microscope Leica DMLB. The Serology Division depends on a Zoom Stereo Microscope of Leica. The Chemistry Division is equipped with a Perkin Elmer Clarus-500 Gas Chromatograph, a Lambda 35 UV/Vis Spectrophotmeter and a SpectrumRX FT-IR Spectrophotometer, both of Perkin Elmer. The Explosive Division possesses a HP Thin Layer Chromatograph of Desaga. The Documents and Documents (Civil) Divisions rely upon a VSC-5000 Digital Imaging Station of Foster and Freeman. The Physics Division makes use of an AAnalyst 700 Atomic Absorption Spectrometer of Perkin Elmer.
